Having your own pet is not necessary, you can volunteer by joining
other therapy teams!
Can
my animal be a Pet Partner?
- Yes, if he or she is controllable, reliable,
and predictable. He or she should also have good manners in public
places and enjoy visiting with strangers.
- Domesticated animals are eligible to be an
Animal Partner and will make
wonderful visiting teams. Examples of registered pets include dogs,
cats, guinea pigs, rabbits, rats, horses, goats llamas, donkeys,
potbellied pigs, miniature pigs, cockatoos, african gray parrots, and
chickens.
Some
basic prerequesites:
- Your pet must have lived in your home for at
least 6 months and must be 1 year at the time he or she is evaluated.
("Pocket pets" - hamsters etc, must be at least 6 months old). If your
pet is too young or not ready yet, email us for help on how to get
started training to be a therapy animal!
- The handler must be 16 or older, OR 10 to 15
with a parental guardian who must accompany him or her at all times.
